Operation of a rotary screw compressor

The rotary screw compressor has 2 rotors that can push air through it. The pressure is hence created. 

The compression of air is achieved and created by the secondary and main rotors that synchronize and mesh with each other in a housing of dual bore and one-piece design. Helical grooves are contained in the main or the primary rotor. 

In the water-injected or the oil-free designs, the fluid gets introduced in the second step of compressor operation. 

This removes the compression heat and also seals all the internal clearances. The injection of the fluid also prevents any kind of metal or rotor contact. Some designs of rotary screw compressors are oil-free.

The operation of the screw compressor is in multiple stages so that the efficiency of the process can be improved and the highest pressure can be produced. 

In some of the screw compressor designs, the air and the oil are discharged directly to the next operational stage. In others, the oil is removed, and the air is cooled between 2 successive stages within the intercooler.
