Drug Therapy

The FDA currently approves six medications to treat symptoms of BPH.

  • Alfuzosin (Uroxatral)

  • Doxazosin (Cardura)

  • Dutasteride (Avodart)

  • Finasteride (Proscar)

  • Tamsulosin (Flomax)

  • Terazosin (Hytrin)

To treat an enlarged prostate, a doctor might prescribe one or more of these drugs.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

Some patients did not respond well to drug therapy. Doctors are now looking into minimally invasive options that may be possible. These treatments can be less invasive than traditional surgery. There are several options:

Transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT): This treatment uses computer-controlled microwaves to pass through a catheter and destroy excess prostate tissue.

This is used to remove part of the enlarged prostate and protect the urethra against heat damage.

Water-induced Thermotherapy: This treatment uses heated water to remove excess tissue.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU): This treatment uses ultrasound waves in order to remove excess prostate tissue. It has not been approved by FDA for US use.

Surgical Treatment

Doctors consider the surgical treatment of BPH to be the best. This surgical procedure can be performed in a variety of ways, including:

Transurethral resection (TURP), a procedure that removes a piece of prostate tissue from each side of the body, does not require an incision.
